On this day (April 25) in 2021, Chinese director Chloe Zhao won the Oscar for Best Director. She is the first non-white director and the second female director to win an Oscar.
'Nomadland (2020)', written, directed and edited by Chloe, won three awards at the 93rd Academy Awards. The film won Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. The film based on the life and struggles of marginalized American citizens was nominated for awards in 6 categories.
'Nomadland' also won the British Academy Film Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography. Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win the best director award at the Oscars. She won the award for 'The Heart Locker' in 2010.
